Dan Graham

Dan Graham is a theatre director and disability advocate with a strong focus on access support for neurodivergent performing artists. He is currently a Churchill Fellow, researching access and opportunities for professional artists who are neurodivergent. Dan is also publishing a book, Authentic Voices, Safe Spaces: Interviews with Neurodivergent Artists in Australia, which will be released by Routledge.

Dan has a neurodivergent disability and lives with neurological challenges that affect his life and creative work. His lived experience informs his artistic practice and leadership in access. His directing and advocacy work have taken him across Australia and internationally, including collaborations with the Atlantic Theatre Company and Pasadena Playhouse in the United States, and the Globe Theatre in the United Kingdom. In Australia, he has worked with organisations such as Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Festival, Sydney Fringe, Antipode Theatre Company and Ensemble Theatre.

He was an ISPA Fellow and completed an IATL Internship at Lincoln Center as part of the Big Umbrella Festival. Dan is also a fellow of the Australia Council’s Future Leaders Program and has received support from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and Create NSW.

Dan studied a Bachelor of Arts (Communication) and a Master of Creative Arts (Theatre, specialising in directing) at the University of Tasmania. He completed Honours in Performance Studies at the University of Sydney, with a thesis exploring the relationship between the playwright’s intent and the director’s vision. He also holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

He currently serves on the Disability Advisory Committees for Sydney Festival and Sydney Fringe, and is a board member of the Hickson Road Group. He is also a member of the Artists Advisory Group for Accessible Arts NSW. Dan’s previous roles include Board Director of Arts Access Australia, Co-Chair of the MEAA Artists with Disability Board, and a member of the LGBTQIA+ Disability Advisory Group for ACON.

Dan continues to use his directing practice and advocacy to drive more inclusive approaches in the arts and to elevate the voices of neurodivergent artists in Australia and beyond.
